English as an Additional Language or Dialect
At Balga Senior High School, we embrace and support the multicultural diversity of all our students.
In 2018, Balga SHS offers English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) courses to *eligible Senior High School students in Years 11 and 12 as a WACE English pathway.
The EAL/D courses are designed for students who speak another language or dialect as their first or ‘home’ language. EAL/D focuses on development of the competent use of Standard Australian English (SAE) in a range of contexts [School Curriculum and Standards Authority, 2017].
As part of their WACE courses, *eligible students can now enrol in:
EAL/D Foundation – Year 11 and 12
The EAL/D Foundation course is designed for students who speak another language or dialect as their first or ‘home’ language and who have not demonstrated the literacy standard in the OLNA. EAL/D focuses on the mechanics of Standard Australian English (SAE) and its use in the community, the workplace or in further education or training. Practical, relevant tasks delivered through a range of engaging contexts teach students to become effective communicators, code switching between languages or dialects successfully.
EAL/D General - Year 11 and 12
The EAL/D General course prepares students for a range of post-secondary destinations in further education, training and the workplace
EAL/D ATAR - Year 11 (Year 12 commencing in 2018)
The EAL/D ATAR course develops academic English skills to prepare students for tertiary study.
